Garlic - Fresh
Garlic can be given to dogs and cats to prevent internal as well as external parasites – so fleas, ticks, mites and worms. Work with your vet to determine a safe amount for your pet’s body weight. Garlic is only toxic IF given in very, very large amounts. If you do not want to give fresh garlic, capsules can be bought for dogs, such as the garlic capsules from the Canine Health Concern Store at www.chcstore.weebly.com. Garlic juice can also be used by combing through the fur, bought from www.dorwest.com.

Black Walnut is a rich source of the trace mineral chromium and is also high in iodine. Black walnut is a very effective flea repellent for dogs when given orally several times a week. It can be purchased in capsules or in liquid form. Give only the minimum effective dose because it can be toxic in higher doses. Herbalists classify black walnut as an astringent because it is rich in tannin, a toning substance. The unripe hulls of the black walnut are high in vitamin C. Available from www.chcstore.weebly.com.
Apple Cider Vinegar
A spoonful of this stuff added to your dog’s water makes their skin more acidic and not-at-all tasty to fleas. If apple cider vinegar is not your dog’s cup of tea, you can dilute it 50/50 with water, pour into a spray bottle and use as a repellent. It can be bought from most health food stores!
Other Suggestions (from Mercola Healthy Pets) Essential oil sprays containing lavender, peppermint, geranium, lemongrass or citronella can be very effective as parasite deterrents. You need to purchase a pre-blended product or work with an animal aromatherapist to make sure you’re using safe oils at the correct concentration as dog and cat doses are different. Also Cedar oil is a long-recognized flea eradicator, and products exist that are specially formulated for cats and dogs. Make a natural flea repellent by adding six or seven drops of the essential oils of rosemary, peppermint, eucalyptus, tea tree, and citronella to a cup of water and shaking well. Use a spray bottle to apply the solution to your dog's coat every other day.
* Give a double dose for the first month to expel any possible tapeworms
** Give a conventional worming treatment to expel any possible heart or lungworms that may have already left the gut and start on Verm-X at the same time, Verm-X will then take over, and you won't need conventional worming treatments again.
